1395 Drives Selection Guide

Allen-Bradley’s 1395 Drive Series is a selection of DC drives that present in-depth motor control services for different projects. Featuring microprocessor-controlled technology, these drives ensure accurate, precise, and constant operation. Customers can pick from a range of drive ratings for the appropriate motion control solution, with the regenerative drives accessible in 230V AC, 460V AC, 575V AC, and 600V AC voltages with power capacities from 1 to 2500 horsepower. For non-regenerative drives, the voltage options remain the same, yet power ratings may vary. The 2361 CENTERLINE Motor Control Center provides full DC control options for high horsepower applications. This center offers either regenerative or non-regenerative drives with horsepower ranges of 700 to 2500 and current ratings of 1250 amps, 1650 amps, or 3000 amps for regenerative and 1250 amps or 1650 amps for non-regenerative drives.

The 1395 DC drives have come to the market with pre-installed AC inputs, DC contactors, and general I/O interfaces. Customers can further customize their product with boards for independent signals, numerical reference signals, node signals, multi-communication signals, supplemental contacts, compatibility with Remote I/O and Data Highway (DH-485), line reactors, and dynamic brakes. Boasting 6-pulse, full-wave rectified armature control, the drive supplies a performance ranging from 0.01% of the preset speed over a 10:1 speed scope and 0.001% of the peak speed over a 100:1 speed spread (if working in conjunction with an encoder). It is additionally furnished with protection from short overcurrent and motor overload to guarantee a steady performance. Further functionalities include the adjustable time of acceleration and deceleration, preset and running speed control, as well as programmable limitation of current.

Malfunctions with Indications

The 1395 drive features a malfunction recognition system, with thorough diagnostics for evaluating external and internal conditions to take appropriate action as per the instructions. The most pressing malfunctions deemed ‘complex faults’, will prompt a controlled motor stop depending on the value of Parameter 625 “Torque Mode”. Complex faults are more serious, as the drive cannot carry on working and can only be remedied by resetting or disconnecting the power supply. Examples of complex faults include ‘Handshake’ and ‘Internal Memory’. ‘Soft faults’ signify a situation that could be damaging, but the drive can keep functioning, and the fault is removed when a “Clear Fault” command is given. Examples include ‘Velocity Feedback Loss’ and ‘SCR Overtemperature Trip’. The least severe issue is ‘Warning faults’, where a soft fault is anticipated. The drive can operate without disruption, and the fault can be removed using a “Clear Fault” command. Instances of ‘Warning faults’ include ‘Motor Overload Pending’ and ‘Bridge Overload Pending’.

Fault Response Selection

The user has the option to adjust the fault conditions of the 1395 drive to either a Soft Fault or a Warning Fault with the aid of Parameter 623. Each fault is indicated with a single bit which is set to 1 for a Soft Fault and 0 for a Warning Fault. Upon initialization of the parameter table, all bits are set to 1 as the default. If a Warning Fault is preferred, the appropriate bit must be manually switched to 0. The PLC or other external device will identify the Warning Fault if it is configured as such. For increased efficiency, it is suggested to adjust the “Waiting Safe Arm Volts” (bit 5=0) and “Waiting Zero Arm Current” (bit 6=0) as Warning Faults so the current loop has a chance to take corrective action before it results in an undesired effect. Even when Warning Faults are set, the drive will still run, and the other bits should remain at 1.

Bulletin 1300 Programming Terminal

With the Bulletin 1300 Programming Terminal, it is possible to diagnose any issues with the 1395 drive. To assess fault status, access the Main Menu, select “Parameter,” and monitor the fault status parameters 100, 101, and 630. If a Hard or Soft Fault occurs, it will be displayed on the screen. To view faults in the Fault Queue, again access the Main Menu, but this time select “Faults,” and then choose “View Faults.” The INC/DEC keys can be used to navigate through the Fault Queue and the ENTER key to view faults from other processors. If the Programming Terminal is experiencing difficulties, it will be indicated by a missing or inactive pendulum on the initial display.
