Components of Kinetix 5500 Drives

Boasting the most advanced motion control technology available, the Kinetix 5500 drive system offers a complete, sophisticated solution for peak performance. The system comprises a set of essential components, including servo drives, motors, and actuators, and offers optional components that can enhance its performance even further.

The servo drives, which are the heart of the system, come in two models:

  • The 2198-Hxxx-ERS2.
  • The 2198-Hxxx-ERS.

Both models come with the feedback connector kit 2198-KITCON-DSL, which allows for precise and reliable feedback communication. Along with the servo drives, the system requires various:

  • Kinetix VP rotary motors
  • Kinetix VP linear actuator
  • Kinetix MP linear actuators
  • Rotary engines
  • Kinetix LDAT linear thrusters

For optimal operation of Kinetix 5500 servo system components, businesses must employ specific converter kits and feedback wires. These specialized parts are necessary to ensure optimal performance and precision in motion control applications.

Other necessary components include:

  • A 24V power supply
  • Ethernet network and motor cables
  • A shared-bus connection system
  • A Hiperface-to-DSL feedback converter kit

Optional components such as AC line filters, shunt resistors, capacitor modules, and encoder output modules can be incorporated into the system. These supplementary parts can the increase efficiency, precision, and overall effectiveness of the motion control system.

The Kinetix 5500 servo drive system boasts multiple innovative components, including its shared-bus connection setup, allowing for an adjustable arrangement and efficient utilization of resources.

Additionally, the Kinetix 5500 can be combined with 460V Hiperface feedback MP-Series motors and actuators for enhanced motion control purposes. This compatibility broadens the system’s capabilities and opens a wider range of possibilities for motion control.

To make installation easier, an adjustable mounting bracket is available that fits all Kinetix 5500 frame sizes and attaches directly to the drive’s DSL feedback port.

Standard Communication Configurations

The Kinetix 5500 drives are highly versatile and can support different Ethernet topologies, including:

  • Star configuration
  • Linear Configuration
  • Ring Configuration.

They can also be integrated with a CompactLogix 5370 controller to provide advanced Integrated Motion functionality over an EtherNet/IP network.

In the star topology, each device connects directly to a switch, and the dual ports of Kinetix 5500 drives work independently to ensure other devices remain operational if one device fails.

The linear topology configuration connects all devices in a straight line, and communication is lost if a device becomes disconnected from all downstream devices. For devices lacking dual ports, the 1783-ETAP module or attachment needs to be affixed to the conclusion of the line.

The ring topology creates a loop connecting all devices. Even if one device is disconnected, communication can continue as long as there is a DLR supervisor device (such as the Bulletin 1783 ETAP). Devices without double ports can use the 1783-ETAP module.

Kinetix 5500 with Unified Safety

The Kinetix 5500 drives offer two different approaches for implementing safe torque-off (STO): one through physical wiring, and another via EtherNet/IP network. The 2198-Hxxx-ERS drives need an STO connector for both external safety device wiring, as well as hardwired safety connections between the drives.

In an integrated safety configuration, the STO command is sent out by a Compact GuardLogix 5370 or 5570 safety controller through the EtherNet or IP network, then executed by the 2198-Hxxx-ERS2 drives. If Motion and Safety connections are both in use, a single GuardLogix safety controller must be employed.
