Panelview 5500 Selection Guide

PanelView is a visualization and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) solution that is designed by Allen Bradley to address the productivity, innovation, and globalization needs of the industry. These PanelView devices are accompanied by ControlLogix Control System and CompactLogix Control system. The ControlLogix control system by Allen Bradley integrates the operational software, controller, and input-output modules to reduce the cost of development and provide a high-performance easy-to-use environment, while the CompactLogix control system provides high security and increased drive capacity in controllers.

The PanelView 5500 terminals are the HMI devices for controlling the operations over Ethernet/IP network in the industry while being attached to ControlLogix L7 and CompactLogix L1, L2, and L3. The advanced animated graphics and text displays in a high resolution provide the operation with a clear picture of the operation of the machine or process. These terminals offer a keyboard or touch system to control the operations.

PanelView 5500 Important Characteristics

Features and capabilities of the PanelView 5500 are stated as:

  • The tightly integrated control and design system enhance the security and information stay between the PanelView 5500 terminals and the Logix Control Platforms.
  • The PanelView 5500 terminals can have a connection with either ControlLogix L7 or one of the CompactLogix L1, L2, or L3 controllers.
  • A maximum of 50 user-defined screens can be supported.
  • A maximum of 500 Logix-based alarms can be supported.
  • Device Level Ring (DLR), linear, or star network topologies are supported by ethernet communication.
  • The navigation menu is configured to be user-friendly in the HMI system.

PanelView 5500 Operator Interface Features

Graphics and Display

The graphics are the most important part of the interface display system. In PanelView 5500 there are high-resolution wide screens available to observe and view the processes of the system. Graphics can be customized and reused to create better applications throughout the 5500 platform. Animation and vector graphics are also possible in these terminals. Not only this but an option for language switching is available that makes it accessible worldwide without language barriers coming in-between. It has two USB 2.0 (type A) slots and an SD card slot from which the PanelView 5500 can load the projects and display them. PDFs can also be viewed on these terminals. The terminals can be interlinked between a total of 50 screens and one controller that controls the network and a maximum of 500 alarm capacity.

Performance Features

Some of the high-performance features that enhance the efficiency include high-speed buttons, a navigation button with an on-screen pop-up menu, scalable vector graphics, and property binding. Some editing tools include automatic rescaling, alignment guides for a visual effect, and evets and commands options. During the automation process or the troubleshooting process, if an error occurs, a smart runtime error notification appears on the screen. There are device diagnostic screens for PLC and HMI that can detect errors during the troubleshooting process and display in on the screen. All the automation processes can be viewed and operated on a virtual system using an emulator, so the hardware is not damaged using invalid projects.

Developing Environment and Connectivity

The PanelView 5500 is compatible with the CompactLogix 5370 and ControlLogix 5570. It is also compatible to CompactLogix 5380, ControlLogix 5580 and CompactLogix 5480. The Human-Machine Interface based data logging can be done in person or with remote access using VNC remote access servers. These servers are protected and are only accessible to local users.

Environmental Specifications

The PanelView 5500 terminals should be kept cool and dry with a relative humidity of 5 to 95% without condensation. It is very important to have a highly ventilated area to protect the terminals. A standard operating temperature range should be 0°C to 55°C (32°F to 131°F), and while the terminals are not operational, a safe temperature range can be -25°C to 70°C (-13°F to 158°F). Shocks or vibrations can cause the internal wiring of the system to be loose which can damage the terminals, that is why a safe vibrational frequency is 0.012 peak-to-peak, 10-57 Hz, and 2g peak at 57-500 Hz. A safe shock for operating terminals is 15 g acceleration for a duration of 11ms, and for non-operational terminals, it is 30 g acceleration for a duration of 11ms. The enclosure ratings should be NEMA and UL Type 12, 13, 4X, and also rated IP66.

Certifications

There are several certifications associated with PanelView 5500 terminals. These certifications include:

  • c-UL-us: c-UL-us Listed Industrial Control Equipment for Use in Hazardous Locations (E10314); per standards ANSI / ISA 12.12.01 and CSA C22.2 No. 213. rated Class 1, Div 2, Groups A, B, C, D; Enclosure type ratings per UL50 and CSA C22.2 No. 94.2-07; Enclosure ingress protection classified by UL per IEC 60529

While all the AC terminals have a 100-240 V AC with a Maximum and typical power consumption of 105 VA and 43VA at 240V AC, respectively, and an inrush current of 50 A.

PanelView 5500 Limitations

The limitation of the first release of PanelView 5500 platforms is that it has only one controller that can be accessed by only 50 screens. This is an important issue to be resolved as these 5500 products are a premium HMI and using a separate PLC for a single system is not economical.
