PanelView Plus 1000 Terminals

PanelView Plus 1000 terminals, which are a product of Rockwell Automation, is a human-machine interface. It has a modular structure with a base configured unit lying at the helm of the structure. It entertains various communication modes. This terminal can be powered using AC or DC power. Its display panel or display module has TFT color graphics and entertains a total of 3 modes for receiving input instructions from the user. Its memory can also be upgraded in the field. It is capable of supporting peripheral devices also. Allen Bradley has many components available for PanelView Plus 1000 terminals with different catalog numbers. These components can be ordered separately and installed or replaced in the field.

Hardware Structure

Essentially, PanelView Plus 1000 terminals have a modular structure, meaning that it is comprised of different modules. This structure makes its configuration, upgrading (as separate components can also be ordered), and installation quite flexible and quick.

Major structural parts of the PanelView Plus 1000 terminals include:

  • Base-configured unit (Logic unit and display module combined)
  • Communication Module

Logic Module

Almost every feature that these terminals possess, is accommodated by a logic unit in one or the other way. The logic unit accepts power input through a port lying on it. It has options for accommodating SDRAM and flash memory of different sizes. It makes the device capable of connecting to the internet via a 10/100BaseT Ethernet port. It also enables the device for serial communication through an RS-232 port. This ability of the device lets the user transfer or print files. Serial Communication capability is also used for the logic controller. The logic module features two universal serial bus ports also. Through these ports, peripheral devices like a computer mouse, printer, and keyboard are attached. To run operations precisely, the logic module has a real-time clock, which also gets its backup power from a battery.

This module is also equipped with a card slot so a Type I CompactFlash card (though in different sizes or capacity) can be inserted. Logic modules without card slots are also available.

Allen Bradley has a vast range of logic modules that vary in properties such as the amount of flash memory and RAM, the type of input power, and much more.

Display Module

PanelView Plus 1000 terminals have a 10.4-inch screen that displays TFT-colored graphics. Bezels for these terminals can be replaced in the field. PanelView Plus 1000 displays can be upgraded to any larger version display. Allen Bradley has designed two replacements for the backlight of PanelView Plus 1000 terminals. Both are color replacements – one for display modules of series A and the other for series B. The display module of PanelView Plus 1000 terminals has three types of input methods. For all three types, respective replacement bezels are also available.

  • Touch: The touch screen of PanelView Plus 1000 terminals is analog resistive in design. It can be operated using a stylus or a finger. The radius of the tip of the stylus should not be below 1.3mm. The use of some other tool may damage the screen.
  • Keypad: The keypad can be operated using one's finger. The keypad is comprised of sets or groups of keys.
    • PanelView Plus 1000 terminals have programmable function keys. These keys are labeled F1 through F16 and K1 through K16. Legends on these keys can be replaced as per their functionality (legend kit with catalog number 2711P-RFK10 is for PanelView Plus 1000 terminals). These keys initiate various functions on the screen of the terminal.
    • Numeric keys for PanelView Plus 1000 terminals are labeled 0 to 9. This set of keys also includes the keys labeled backspace, right and left tab, enter, Alt, Esc, Ctrl, and shift.
    • Navigation keys are also included in the keypad. These keys enable the user to move the cursor using arrow keys. These keys when used in combination with the Alt key activate the home screen and perform page up, down, and end functions.
  • Both Touch and keypad

Available display modules for PanelView Plus 1000 Terminal along with their characteristics are as follows:

Communication Module

A communication module with some network interface is a sort of accessory module for PanelView Plus 1000 terminals. The logic module already enables the device’s communication capability, but this module can also enhance this capability. This module can be assembled into the terminal on the back side of the display module over the logic module. Networks being entertained by communication modules include ControlNet and/or DH-485/DH+. Available communication modules for PanelView Plus 1000 terminals also have a variety based on conformal coating, and marine certification apart from the communication network.

For PanelView Plus 1000 terminals, communication adapters are also available. To generalize, these adapters work for the whole PanelView Plus series of terminals. Catalog number 1761-NET-AIC is an advanced converter for AIC+ interfaces. The 1747-AIC is used with communication modules having a DH-485 interface. It is an isolated link coupler of type DH-485.

Power Supply

The logic module of PanelView Plus 1000 Terminal has the port to receive power input as mentioned earlier. These terminals have three power options to ensure flexibility and enhance usability. Power options include:

  • AC power with a voltage ranging between 85V and 264V and a frequency ranging between 47 and 63 hertz.
  • Non-isolated DC power with a voltage range of 18 to 32V, a nominal voltage of 24V DC.
  • Isolated DC power has the same range as that of non-isolated DC power

If the terminal is AC powered and the application requires a DC supply, then an AC to DC supply can be used. Allen Bradley offers the 1606-XLE120E for this purpose, which can be mounted easily using DIN rails.

USB Ports

PanelView Plus 1000 terminals have two USB ports that can be used to attach peripheral devices to the terminal. These ports are designed to be compatible with hazardous environments. Allen Bradley notifies its users to make field wirings that comply with article 50 of the National Electrical Code. It also suggests using USB devices with a USB hub.

As far as parameters are concerned, the open-circuit voltage of the port is 5.25V DC. The maximum output current or short circuit current limit is 1.68 amps. Maximum capacitance and maximum inductance combined for the USB port and the attached device should not be more than 10µF and 15µH respectively.

Terminal Wiring

While wiring PanelView Plus 1000 terminal safety requirements for personnel and hardware structure must be taken into account, Allen Bradley recommends its user make terminal wiring compatible with NFPA 70E, IEC60364, and other measures for employee safety. The manufacturer instructs to connect the terminal and other electronic devices to their branches in the circuit. Safety devices like a fuse and circuit breaker should also be installed to protect the input supply line. These safety devices should not be rated above 15A. Power supply lines and communication lines should not share the same route, and if two lines tend to cross unavoidably, then crossing must be at a right angle. Anyhow, low-level DC lines (below 10V) can share a route with communication lines. To avoid Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), all cables must be grounded accurately and shielded appropriately.

Adapter Plates

Allen Bradley has given its users a range of options in the form of adapter kits so one terminal could be made adaptable to some later version.

  • Adapter plate 2711P-RAK10 is for making PanelView Plus 1000 keypad terminals adaptable to the keypad cut-out dimensions of PanelView 1000 or 1000E terminals.
  • Adapter plate 2711P-RAT10 is for making PanelView Plus 1000 touch screen terminals adaptable to the touch screen cut-out dimensions of PanelView 1000 or 1000E terminals.

Environmental Suitability

The PanelView Plus 1000 terminals are safe for use in:

  • Ordinary and non-hazardous locations
  • Complete Class III
  • Group F and G of Division 2 in Class II
  • Group A through D, in Division 2 of class I

This terminal is instructed not to be used in an atmosphere where there are gases with ignition temperatures below 135 degrees Celsius. PanelView Plus 1000 terminals are designed to be used in industrial environments where there is a pollution of degree 2. Applications with overvoltage degree 2 are fine for this terminal. PanelView Plus 1000 terminals work well at altitudes up to 2000m without suffering from derating. The temperature in the surroundings of the terminal should remain between 0 and 55 degrees Celsius.

If one uses this equipment in hazardous environments then precautionary measures must be taken, such as the terminal should not be disconnected if it is still powered, or the area is still declared hazardous. Components should also not be attached or removed when the device is receiving power. The wiring of the terminal must follow rules stated in N.E.C. and C.E.C. Furthermore, peripheral devices attached to the terminal must be safe for use in the respective environment.

Cut-out Dimensions

PanelView Plus 1000 terminals are quite smart in their design. They have the following cut-out dimensions for all three types of terminals:

  • Keypad: 224 millimeters (height) by 375 millimeters (width)
  • Touch: 224 millimeters (height) by 305 millimeters (width)
  • Keypad and Touch: 224 millimeters (height) by 375 millimeters (width)

Terminal Installation

While installing the terminal, different measures from various aspects should be considered. Clearance around the terminal is one of those aspects. The ambient temperature of the terminal's surroundings should not exceed 55 degrees Celsius, so the terminal should be installed such that this temperature limit can be observed. Allen Bradley recommends maintaining a 51mm clearance on the top, 51mm on the bottom, 25mm on each side, and 25mmin on the back of PanelView Plus 1000 terminals.

Safety measures should also be followed while installing the panel, like removing the power connection before removing, replacing, or installing any component.

Terminal Operations

After configuring the terminal, there is a range of operations that can be performed for the terminal. These are done mainly through function keys.

  • F1 is to load the application on some other screen that pops up after this key is pressed. The name of the loaded application will appear after the current application in the list once loading is finished.
  • F2 corresponds to running a “.mer” application which is displayed below the current application. For running an application, it must be loaded earlier.
  • F3 is to open a menu where the user can make configuration settings for some specific application.
  • F4 brings forward a menu for terminal settings. This menu relates to non-application-related settings for the terminal.
  • F5 brings about the option to delete or keep data log files before running a specific application. User toggles between yes and no. To delete alarm history, data logs, and alarm status, yes is chosen. No is to keep all those files intact before running the application.
  • F7 resets the terminal.
  • F8 allows one to exit configuration mode

Status Indicators

PanelView Plus 1000 terminals have two indicators also to denote a communication or hardware fault through the COMM and FAULT indicators.
