Logic Module

Logic modules of PanelView Plus 1250 terminals entail almost all the hardware components which enable its features and make sure it is operating. It has a port to accept power, has space for SDRAM and flash memory, contains an Ethernet port, and features a serial port for communication and USB ports to attach peripheral devices. This module also has a slot for inserting CompactFlash cards of type I. It also contains a real-time clock that receives backup power through a battery. A little more than a dozen types of logic modules are available and categorized based on differences in the available flash memory, power input method, display, certification, et cetera.

Communication Module

The purpose of the communication module is to increase the communication capability of the terminal. For PanelView Plus 1250 terminals, this module can be attached to the base-configured unit easily over the logic module. Communication modules use DH+ or DH-485 and ControlNet for network interfacing.

CompactFlash

The logic module has a CompactFlash card slot. Though, the logic module can also come without the option of CompactFlash. For PanelView Plus 1250 terminals, like all other PanelView Plus devices, CompactFlash has flash memory. Allen Bradley provides CompactFlash cards in various sizes, including 64MB, 128MB, and 256MB. Additionally, one can order this component alone or with a logic module package.

Use of Peripheral Devices

Peripheral devices such as a computer mouse, keyboard, and printer may be attached to the terminal to ease the user to instruct for performing some function. For this purpose, Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports are featured on this terminal series. These ports are compatible with hazardous locations. USB ports for PanelView Plus 1250 terminals have s 5.25V open-circuit voltage and a 1.68A maximum output current. Ten (10) microfarad is the maximum permissible capacitance of the ports and cables combined and fifteen (15) microhenry is the maximum allowed inductance of the ports and cables combined.

High Bright Displays

PanelView Plus 1250 terminals come in high bright displays as well. It is mainly for outdoor installation. The manufacturer recommends users of this terminal mount the terminal appropriately to maximize the life of its display and front bezel.

Proper installation is to ensure the prolonged life of the terminal by saving it from harmful infrared and ultraviolet rays. As ultraviolet radiations impact the quality of plastic by fading its color and making it brittle slowly, an antiglare overlay can be used so the front of the terminal remains safe and the terminal’s life is prolonged.

If exposure to the sun increases the temperature of the terminal beyond 40 degrees Celsius, then the visor kit must be used along with it. This kit helps maintain the internal temperature. To keep the temperature of PanelView Plus 1250 high bright display terminals below 55 degrees Celsius, active cooling or string fans can be used. A screen saver can also be used to keep screen temperature within the limits because a significant amount is generated by the backlight installed in high bright displays. Moreover, the terminal should be positioned such as it lies vertically. This placement precaution is to avoid solar loading on the terminal during peak times.

High bright display terminals of the PanelView Plus 1250 series are equipped with temperature sensors. These sensors signal for the reduction of backlight intensity as the temperature crosses 55 degrees Celsius. This helps reduce damage to the display of the terminal. Additionally, if the temperature drops below 0 degrees Celsius, then a heater can be used accordingly.

Power Input Options

PanelView Plus 1250 terminals have three power input options. This brings about application flexibility. These power options include:

  • Alternating Current (AC) supply with a voltage ranging from 85V to 264V. A secondary winding of a transformer must be connected with AC-powered terminals. The permissible frequency range must also be between 47 and 63Hz.
  • Non-isolated Direct Current (DC) supply for a voltage ranging from 18V to 32V
  • Isolated DC supply with a voltage range of 18V to 32V. Though, the use of a fuse kit with indication is required when an isolated DC supply is used.

If the AC power option is available while the application in use is DC, an AC to DC supply or converter (rectifier type) is available with the catalog number 1606-XLE120E. This power supply can be mounted using a DIN rail.

Availability of Adapter Plates

For PanelView Plus 1250 terminals, Allen Bradley provided various adapter plates. These plates are used to enhance device usability and application feasibility by making them adapted to other terminals.

  • Adapter kit 2711P-RAK12E is to adapt a PanelView Plus 1250 terminal with a keypad to a keypad cut-out of PanelView 1200 or PanelView 1400E terminals

Use in Hazardous Locations

Allen Bradley instructs its users to use a PanelView Plus 1250 terminal in a non-hazardous location. For this, a list of standardized environmental groups is given e.g., Class III type location is safe for use of such terminals. Anyhow, if the equipment is being used in any hazardous location, then precautionary measures are to be followed, such as:

  • Equipment should not be removed before power is disconnected and the area becomes non-hazardous
  • Equipment connections should not be disconnected before power removal
  • Environmental compatibility of peripheral devices must be taken care of separately
  • While with some precautions, the terminal can be used in hazardous locations and the real-time clock and battery cannot be changed in a hazardous location in any case
  • The wiring of equipment must be compatible with respective standards of the National Electrical Code (article 500) and/or the Canadian Electric Code
  • The terminal should not be installed in locations where the surrounding atmosphere has gases that ignite below 135°C

Environmental Specifications

The recommended temperature range for this device is between 0 degrees Celsius and 55 degrees Celsius while it is operating. However, if it is not operating, then the lower limit decreases to -25 degrees Celsius, and the upper limit increases to 70 degrees Celsius. PanelView Plus 1250 terminals are designed for industrial environments having degree 2 pollutions. This equipment can be operated well at an altitude of 2000m maximum without suffering derating. This terminal dissipates 240BTU/hr (British Thermal Unit) of heat. The relative humidity without condensation in the terminal’s surroundings can vary between 5% and 95%. PanelView Plus 1250 terminals can bear a shock of 15g for a duration of 11 milliseconds while in operation and 30 g for a duration of 11 milliseconds when it is not operational. This terminal series can bear a vibration of 10 to 57Hz with a 0.012 peak-to-peak displacement and 57 to 500 Hz if it has a 2 g peak acceleration.

Enclosure for Mounting the Terminal

Allen Bradley offers PanelView Plus 1250 terminals as a piece of open-type equipment. An enclosure must be used for mounting this terminal. The manufacturer suggests making careful considerations while choosing an enclosure for the terminal, such as:

  • The enclosure is designed to comply with environmental conditions which exist at the specific place where equipment is being installed. In other words, enclosure ratings must be paid heed to.
  • The enclosure must be designed appropriately so live parts of the terminal are not accessible and the chances of personal injury are eliminated.
  • The enclosure design should allow access to the terminal insides through the use of appropriate tools only.
  • The rating of the panel or enclosure should be equivalent to the terminal rating specified by NEMA or IEC ratings.
  • If an appropriate enclosure will not be used, it would disregard panel rating also.
  • The color of paint, the size, and the power dissipation by its internal components will also impact the cabin temperature so these parameters must also be considered while choosing an enclosure for a specific environment.
  • A sloped enclosure is strictly forbidden if sunlight will be shed directly onto the terminal.

All in all, Allen Bradley suggests enclosures with ratings of NEMA type 12, 13, IP65, and IP54. Enclosures with a 4X rating can also be used for indoor installations only.

Cut-out Dimensions and Mounting

The cut-out dimensions for PanelView Plus 1250 terminals of any type have a height of 257 millimeters. For terminals with a keypad and touch screen, as well as just a keypad, the width of the cut-out dimensions should measure 390 millimeters. For touchscreen terminals and high bright touchscreen terminals, the width of the cut-out dimensions should measure 338 millimeters.

Earlier in the articles, the permissible temperature limits for these terminals were discussed. To keep the terminal within its specified temperature range, the mounting of the device plays an important role. Allen Bradley recommends keeping a minimum clearance around the terminal when mounting. These clearances include:

  • 51 millimeters on the top of the terminal
  • 51 millimeters on the bottom of the terminal
  • 25 millimeters on the sides of the terminal
    • If a memory card or wiring cable is to be installed, then the minimum clearance on the sides of the terminal should be increased to 102 millimeters.
  • 25 millimeters on the back of the terminal
