This Allen-Bradley SLC 500 Digital DC Output Module comes with 32 outputs. It has a voltage range of 10-30V DC and can be installed in any 1746 I/O chassis. The electronically protected module 1746-OB32E protects the module from faults such as current overload or a short circuit. The unit is triggered by a thermal response and cuts out the supply. This response is very fast and the current supply is curbed within a time of the order of milliseconds after a temperature threshold is met. While the amps are controlled, all the remaining channels remain operational and in communication with the controller or processor of the module. The protection is not possible in case the polarity is reversed during the alternate current power source wiring. This electronic protection layer is not in lieu of physical devices such as the fuse, circuit breakers or other safety devices required by the code for protection of the device. Being electronic, the protective module goes a step further by automatically resetting a trip due to overload. The temperature is allowed to decrease after limiting the current before resetting. If there are any physical fuses tripped during the same event they have to be reset manually. In case of short circuit or overload current trip, the E-Fuse LED will light up using 5 Volts of direct current through the backplane and load power from an external source. The module has a maximum limit on continuous current per common of 4 Amperes at 0 to 60 degrees Celsius and continuous current per common pin of 2 Amperes for the same temperature range. It dissipates heat of 0.25 Watts per point with a minimum of 0.95 Watts and total of 8.95 Watts.
