The Allen-Bradley 150-A16NB SMC-2 smart motor controller is a soft starter that can be used to start standard single and 3-phase squirrel cage induction motors. The solid-state controller has an input line voltage of 380 to 480 volts AC (+10%, -15%) at 50/60 Hz (hertz), with output current and power ratings of 16 amperes and 4 to 7.5k W (3 to10 Hp), respectively. The controller is designed with IEC and NEMA/MG1 rated thermal capacity with maximum heat dissipation of 70 watts. Its RC networks provide a high DV/DT protection with a peak inverse voltage (PIV) of 1400 volts. The controller has a compact design with built-in protective and energy saving features, the latter being useful when the motor remains lightly loaded or unloaded for longer periods of time.
The controller has three (3) standard modes of operation (soft start, current limit start, and full voltage start) and can be used in two configurations: in series with an electromechanical motor starter and as a controller with an interface option so that it can be operated externally. Additionally, the controller can operate within a temperature range of +32 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit and can be stored at –40 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit at a non-condensing relative humidity range of 5 to 95%. It is designed to withstand an operating shock of 30G for 11 milliseconds and maximum vibrations of 2.5G for 60 minutes. This device can be operated at an altitude reaching up to 2000 meters. The controller is packaged in a NEMA open type rated enclosure measuring 154 x 180 x 160 mm and weighs 7 lb (3.15 kg).
