Produced by Allen-Bradley, part number 808-M1 is a speed switch. When the shaft of a speed switch is spun, a magnetic induction coupling activates a contact, similar to how a light switch works. There is one contact for clockwise operation and one contact for counterclockwise operation. It has an operating temperature range varied between –22 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit (or –30 and 66 degrees Celsius) and a storage temperature range varied between –22 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit (or –30 to 93 degrees Celsius). The Bulletin 808 shaft must be operated at the highest attainable speed within its maximum working speed for the best accuracy. It is advised that the continuous driving speed be at least twice as fast as the contacts are intended to function at. This will provide the torque required to keep the contacts in the appropriate position, minimizing false contact operation in the presence of severe shock and vibration. The driven speed may be more than the adjustable range speed, but it must not be greater than the maximum shaft operating speed. The Bulletin 808 and the machine must be positively coupled.
The contact working speed of this speed switch is simply adjustable with two exterior adjustment screws, one for each pair of contacts. The screw is rotated to modify the contact working speed when the speed switch has attained normal operating temperature. Furthermore, mounting brackets for type 1, 4, and 13 enclosures are offered in three different styles. There are three options: base mounting, 3-point flange mounting, and 4-point flange mounting. These devices may also be purchased without a mounting bracket for direct attachment. The Type 7 and 9 enclosures are only available with a base mounting option.
