Part number W26, a heater element that was designed and manufactured by Allen-Bradley, belongs to the W series family of heater elements. It is described to provide protection in overload relays. This heater element it is designed to protect large electric motors against overcurrent. Its maximum amperage rating is 0.78 amperes (A), and it is divided into two (2) sizes that are size 0 and size 1. Additionally, the most suitable applications for the W26 heater element consist of Bulletin 100, 500, 609 and 1200 line starters.

W26 or the W series heater elements, are able to protect against overcurrents via the sensing of current that is flowing to a motor or more specifically a starter. Each unit belonging to the W-series of heater elements, including the W26 heater element, is made up of bi-metallic elements which act as small heaters which, when warmed due to the flow of current into the motor get bent. Furthermore, when there is a case of overcurrent or high levels of current flowing for longer than rated times, the heaters to the contacts of the relay through which current is flowing to the contactor's coil become open. Now, the selection of a W Series requires finding the correct Correction Factor Ratio (C.F.R). The W26 heater element has the rating of Class 20 protection, and this is defined as if a current is at 600 percent of its described rating (which is 0.78 amperes), the unit or in this case the W26 overload relay or heater element will be tripped in 20 seconds or less. +40 degrees Celsius is defined as the normal operating temperature for this W series heating element.
