The W56 kit from Allen Bradley is a thermal overload heater element and a member of the W series, which is also known as type W. The Type W heating elements for the Bulletin 500 line starters, as well as this overload relay composed of eutectic alloy, are used to offer standard overload relay protection for Allen-Bradley products. Normally, it draws a current level of 14 to 15.1 amps. When subjected to a current equivalent to 600 percent of its rated current, a Class 20 overload relay will trip in 20 seconds or fewer. This allows functioning at the Class 20 level and is intended for general-purpose applications. The ambient temperature rating for this W56 is +40 degrees Celsius (+104 degrees Fahrenheit). In most cases, the ambient temperature at both the motor and the controller is the same as well. In such a situation, the overload relay is intended to detect changes in ambient temperature and to safeguard the motor throughout a wide range of temperatures. The insulating life of the motor may be reduced to less than 100 percent of its usual rated current while operating at high temperatures (more than +40 degrees Celsius). Temperatures below 40 degrees Celsius allowed for more than 100 percent of the typically rated current to be extracted from the motor without causing insulation life to be reduced. Consequently, there is an inverse connection between the ambient temperature of the motor and the output of the motor. Regardless of the motor, the allowed power reduces as the ambient temperature increases and vice versa.
