Part number W68 is a product designed to be a heater element that was manufactured by Allen-Bradley. This heater element is part of the W series of heater elements. It is described as a thermal overload heater element that can provide protection in overload relays. The heater element does not provide protection against overcurrent for power conductors; however, it has the ability to provide protection against overcurrent to large electric motors. The amperage rating of the thermal overload heater element is from 38.5 to 51 Amperes and is given a size 4. The main applications of the heater element that are suitable for use are magnetic motor starters, thermal overload relays, and motor controls.
The W series Overload relays, or more specifically the W68, have the ability to provide protection against overcurrent by sensing the current flowing in the direction of a motor or more specifically in this case a starter. Each of the W series units including, the W68 heater element, consists of bi-metallic elements and they act as small heaters as they are heated due to current flow into the motor. In the case of flow of current in high levels or overcurrent for too long, the bimetallic relay contacts that carry current to the contactor's coil become open. The rating of the class protection of the W68 heater element is classified as a Class 20 protection, which means that in twenty seconds or less, the W68 heater element or overload relay will be tripped if the current is at a level that is six hundred (600) percent of its rating. The rated temperature for the normal operation of this device is +40 degrees Celsius.
