The IC200MDL640 comprises two groups of 8 discrete inputs. Inputs in each group can be either positive logic type or negative logic type such that they receive current from input devices and return the current on the common, or they receive current from the common and return current to the input device. Input devices are always related between the input and common terminals. The on-state current varies from 2 to 5.5 milliamperes and off-state varies from 0 to 0.5 milliamperes. Power for module operation is given from the backplane and there is no need for any external power supply. The processing of discrete inputs received from field devices is performed by the CPU or NIU at a faster rate. The module is equipped with 2 Led indicators. Individual green LEDs indicate the on/off state of each input point and the green OK LED status indicates whether backplane power is available to the module or not.

The module’s basic input on and off response time is 0.5 milliseconds. To compensate for conditions such as noise spikes or switch bounce extra filtering is required. The filter response time is software configurable with a default time of 1 millisecond. This module is free from Thermal Derating which makes it suitable for environmental conditions. The backplane current consumption is 25 milliamperes maximum. There is no point to point isolation provided to the module, Group to Group isolation is 250 Volts AC continuous; 1500 Volts AC for 1 minute. The field wiring consists of 18 terminals such that each group has 1 common terminal and the input impedance is 10k ohms maximum.
