The 1756-L72 is an Allen-Bradley ControlLogix Series A programmable automation controller with a total of 4 megabytes of user memory (used to store logic/data) as well 0.98 megabytes of input/output (I/O) memory. This controller ships with an included 1 gigabyte Secure Digital (SD) card which can be optionally used for non-volatile memory storage to avoid erasure on power off. The primary use of this SD card is for automatic writing upon occurrence of a fault, which can then be shared with Rockwell Automation in the course of troubleshooting. This non-volatile memory can be upgraded to a maxmum non-volatile storage of 2 gigabytes by replacing with an alternative secure digital card from Rockwell Automation. Only tested and approved SD cards should be used with these controllers in order to minimize the risk of storage corruption and resultant loss of critical data.

This controller also has a USB2 port and a 4-character (alphanumeric) display which can show status codes indicating the current operational conditions. The controller can be paired with a number of proprietary and more broadly available communications options, including Ethernet/IP, Remote I/O Data Highway Plus, SynchLink, ControlNet, and Data Highway Plus. This controller can be used alongside other modules in order to create an Armor ControlLogix device to offer redundancy and enhanced system resilience, so long as it is paired with another comparable controller which is located within the same ControlNet network. This controller draws as little as 5 milliamps of current at 1.2VDC or as much as 800 milliamps at 5.1VDC. Total power dissipation is 2.5W while thermal dissipation is rated at 8.5BTU per hour.
