The enhanced and programmable controller 1785-L20B by Allen-Bradley is from the PLC-5 series and is PLC-5/20 type. It has a user memory of 16k words and total I/O of 512 in any combination or 512 in and 512 out as complementary. The controller has a DH+ communication port and a DH+ remote I/O scanner or adapter port along with one serial port that can be configured as RS-232, 423, or 422A for compatibility. It can take up to 4 I/O racks and 13 I/O chassis with up to 12 of them able to be remote. It has indicators for battery status (battery low shown with red), controller status (green for RUN and red for FAULT), force indicator (amber light when I/O forces are enabled) and channels 0, 1A, 1B connection status (green when active). There are slots for easy installing memory module and for battery. The programmable PLC-5 controller allows users to code ladder logic with programming languages such as BASIC. There are diagnostics and discrete control available for setting up relay logic. The user can also add subroutines to access multiple program files or make use of sequential function charts to control and display the state of a step-by-step process. The structed text syntax of programming language such as BASIC allows complex mathematical algorithms, loop functions, and customization of data table for display screens. The main control programs are used to assign a process or a machine control and it can include sequential function charts, ladder logic, and structured text as required. A common data table can be used by all main control programs for convenience.
