The Allen-Bradley 1785-L30B Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is the central component of any enhanced control system which is built upon the Allen-Bradley PLC-5 series of Programmable Logica Control modules. The Allen-Bradley 1785-L30B Programmable Logic Controller combines into one multip-purpose system a wide variety of extended, local, and remote input/output (I/O) modules using various communication interfaces. The Allen-Bradley 1785-L30B has two built-in ports, which are labelled with the sequential designators of channel 1A and channel 1B. Either (or both) of these ports can operate as a remote I/O scanner or a remote I/O adapter.

The front panel of the Allen-Bradley 1785-L30B Programmable Logic Controller has a key-switch with three positions to select the desired controller mode. These modes are RUN, Program, and Remote. Each of the three positions on the key-switch corresponds with one of these. The RUN mode guards against accidental modification of system programming by allowing only execution and viewing – no reading, writing or editing of programs and data files. The Program (PROG) mode disables all outputs. In this mode, SFC files, data files, and ladder files can be created, deleted, and edited. In the Remote (REM) mode, there are additional sub-modes of Remote Program, Remote Test, and Remote Run.
