These terminals have modular components, communication modules, standard logic modules, base-configured units, display modules, and a power supply (AC or DC).

Modular Components

PanelView Plus 700 terminals use modular components or modules for different functions. This allows a user to configure, install, or upgrade the system more easily and quickly. The use of modular components also brings one choice to order components or modules separately or assembled at the factory depending on the user’s configuration. As mentioned earlier, PanelView Plus 700 terminals use three modular components, namely a communication module, logic module, and display module.

Base-Configured Unit

For PanelView Plus 700 terminals, the base-configured units consist of two parts: a display module and a logic module. Additionally, the input interfaces of these units may vary. These input interfaces include a keypad or a touch screen display.

Logic Module

Logic modules of PanelView Plus 700 terminals have a multitude of features and sub-components to enable the terminals to achieve their functionality. It has a power input port, Ethernet port, RS-232 port for serial communication, and two USB (universal serial bus) ports to attach peripheral devices like a computer mouse, printer, or keyboard. A slot for inserting a Type 1 CompactFlash card, real-time clock, Flash memory, and SDRAM are also embedded in a logic module.

Display Module

Display modules of PanelView Plus 700 terminals have a 6.5-inch (code ‘7’ in the catalog number) screen with a TFT (thin-film transistor) graphical color display. These terminals also have bezels which are easily replaceable in the field. The terminal screen or display can receive input instruction in one of the following three ways:

  • Keypad (code ‘k’ in the catalog number)
  • Touch (code ‘T’ in the catalog number)
  • Keypad or Touch (code ‘B’ in the catalog number)

PanelView Plus 700 Terminals have the following display modules available:

  • Keypad operatable color display with the catalog number 2711P-RDK7C
  • Touch operatable color display with the catalog number 2711P-RDT7C

Keypads

The keypad of a PanelView Plus 700 terminal is operatable using one’s finger. This terminal has a set of keys specified for different functionalities. The keys that make up these keypads include:

  • Function keys that run from F1 through F10, and from K1 through K12. These function keys are programmable and initiate or trigger specified functions on the screen of a PanelView Plus 700 terminal. To customize labels for the function keys, replaceable legends are also available.
  • Numeric keys on a PanelView Plus 700 terminal include keys from 0 through 9, enter, backspace, left tab, right tab, Alt, Ctrl, Esc, and Shift.
  • Navigation keys of these keypads include four arrow keys. These keys help users select options while moving the cursor. When these keys are used along with the Alt key, they bring up the home screen, end a function, or move the page up or down.

Touch Displays

Allen Bradley provides touch displays for PanelView Plus 700 terminals. These touch screens are analog resistive screens that can be operated using one’s finger or a stylus. However, the device must have a minimum tip radius of 1.3 millimeters, so the screen does not get damaged. The manufacturer also warns its users to not use any other tool for operating the screen because it could result in damage.

Communication Module

PanelView Plus 700 terminals bring its users the option to attach a communication module to a base-configured unit. It can be installed quite easily on the back of a base-configured unit over the logic module. Communication modules enhance the communication capacity of the terminal with the ControlNet and DH+ (or DH-45) network. PanelView Plus 700 terminals have RS-232, Ethernet, and 2 USB slots for connectivity (represented with code ‘4’ in the catalog number).

CompactFlash Cards

Logic modules in the base-configured unit have a card slot for CompactFlash cards. For PanelView Plus 700 terminals, flash memory is provided with an internal CompactFlash card.

Power Input Options

Base-configured units of PanelView Plus 700 terminals have three power input options to bring its users' application flexibility. These options include:

  • AC (Alternating Current) signal that can fall between 85 and 264 volts (code ‘A’ in the catalog number). The frequency of the signal may vary between 47 and 63 hertz. AC-connected terminals must be provided isolation from the main supply line by connecting a secondary transformer to the terminal. The maximum power consumption of PanelView Plus 700 AC terminals can reach up to 160VA.
  • Non-isolated DC (Direct Current) signals with a nominal voltage of 24V DC, can range between 18 and 32 volts (code ‘D’ in the catalog number). The maximum power consumption of DC terminals is 70W.
  • Isolated DC signals have the same limits of 18 and 32 volts. However, a fuse kit having an indication must be used while choosing this option. In this mode of connection, each terminal in the system is powered by an isolated, ungrounded, and separate power supply. Such connection eliminates the risk of damage to the terminal due to a loop current in the ground wire.

If one has a terminal with a DC application with an AC power source, then an AC to DC power supply (converter or rectifier) can be used. Allen Bradley’s power supply with catalog number 1606-XLE120E is a suitable option for this purpose.

Wiring Standards

Allen Bradley instructs users of PanelView Plus 700 terminals to have wiring according to the wiring methods stated in Class I, Class II, or Class III of Division 2, Article 501, Article 502, or Article 503 of the National Electric Code. Wiring can also be made following the Canadian Electrical Code while following the methods stated in Section 18-1J2.

Furthermore, the input power shall be protected using a fuse or circuit breaker with a maximum rating of 15A. This input power line should also not share the path with a communication line. However, low voltage DC lines and communication lines can reside in the same conduit. If power and communication lines cross, make them cross at a right angle. All the cables need to be shielded and grounded properly to avoid electromagnetic interference.

Enclosures

PanelView Plus 700 terminals are an open type of equipment. However, the user must put it in an enclosure before mounting it. Enclosures should be rated appropriately for use in a specific environment. The enclosure design should also ensure that its live parts are not accessible, so it could not pose an injury risk to anyone around the terminal. Additionally, the inner parts of the enclosure must be accessible using tools. To make the terminal meet a specific NEMA type or IEC rating, the mounting panel or enclosure must have an equivalent rating.

Dimensions and Mounting

PanelView Plus 700 terminals come in two different sizes depending on the input method. The cut-out dimensions of a PanelView Plus 700 terminal with a keypad and touch display or just a keypad measure 167 millimeters for the height and 264 millimeters for the width. Display modules of these terminals have cut-out dimensions of 193 millimeters for the height and 290 millimeters for the width, while the cut-out dimensions of the terminals with a touchscreen display measure 154 millimeters for the height and 220 millimeters for the width. The display module has cut-out dimensions of 179 millimeters for the height and 246 millimeters for the width.

The ambient temperature around the terminal should not exceed 55 °C. This factor impacts terminal mounting the most. There should be enough clearance space around the device inside the enclosure that this temperature limit is maintained. Heat production by other devices inside the terminal enclosure must also be paid heed to. Allen Bradley suggests its users keep a minimum of 51 millimeters of clearance on the top of the terminal, 51 millimeters of clearance on the bottom of the terminal, 25 millimeters on the sides of the terminal (if a memory card is to be installed or cable wiring is to be made, expand this clearance to a minimum 102 millimeters), and 25 millimeters of clearance on the back side of the terminal.

Environmental Compatibility

If a PanelView Plus 700 terminal is marked, then it can be used in an ordinary and non-hazardous location. It can also be used in environments classified as Class III. A few locations belonging to Classes I and II are also deemed suitable for operation. More specifically Groups F and G, Division 2, Class II; Group IIC, Zone 2, Class I; and Groups A, B, C, and D, Division 2, Class I (this group will not remain suitable for terminal placement if any of its components are substituted) are recommended operating locations for PanelView Plus 700 terminals. Anyhow, if the terminal is placed in a location that is declared hazardous, then the users need to follow a set of instructions issued by Allen Bradley. For example, one should not remove the equipment unless the power has been disconnected and the area is declared non-hazardous. Even the real-time clock and battery should not be removed in a hazardous area. One should also not make or remove connections without removing power and having a declaration of the area being non-hazardous.

These terminals, being used at industrial sites, can be surrounded by Degree 2 pollution. The altitude of the installation site should not exceed 2000 meters.

Moreover, if one tends to use any peripheral device with the terminal, then the location suitability of that device must also be considered.

If seen at a micro level, the maximum ambient temperature for the terminal should remain at 55 °C. Moreover, the terminal should not be installed in such environments where there could be gases with an ignition temperature lower than 135°C.
