Power conditioning problems and the requirement for extra hardware are considerably minimized by including higher-rated components and strong voltage-withholding devices for phase-to-ground as well as phase-to-phase and protection.

Space-Saving Hardware Features

  • Multiple algorithms of efficient control of motor: For sensor and sensorless induction motor control as well as brushless permanent magnet motor operation, Flux Vector Control makes use of the proprietary FORCE Technology. This maximizes application flexibility.
  • Feedback options: The precision of speed and position regulators is enhanced by a variety of feedback choices, including a basic incremental encoder, an optional incremental encoder, a resolver, and high-resolution encoder feedback interface cards. There are also interfaces for linear feedback devices from Temposonics and Stahl SSI.
  • Integral EMC Filtering: A small, all-in-one package is offered by integrated EMC filtering together with integrated DC bus choke common mode cores and common mode capacitors to satisfy EMC specifications, including CE in Europe.
  • Internal Communications: The drive may be integrated into the production process thanks to internal communications. All internal communication options include status indicators that are visible on the lid for simple setup and drive communication monitoring. Users may effortlessly operate, configure, and gather data as they seamlessly connect their whole system from the shop floor to the top level.
  • Integral dynamic brake transistors offer a cheap way to switch regenerative energy without the expense of additional chopper circuits. Power ratings for these intrinsic transistors range from 0.5 to 200 HP.
  • The Internal Dynamic Brake Resistor (up to 25 HP) uses no additional panel space and provides strong braking torque quickly.

Control and Performance

Performance may be adapted to the needs of the application owing to many motor control algorithms:

  • For straightforward Fan and Pump applications, use Volts/Hertz.
  • Sensorless vector control for generating strong torque over a wide speed range.
  • Vector control for superb low-speed/zero-speed performance and torque management (with Vector Control cassette).

The Allen-Bradley patented Force is utilized in the PowerFlex 700S drive Vector Control. Technology that, whether used with or without feedback, offers superb low-speed performance. This market-leading control offers the best drive performance while being just as simple to operate as any other general-purpose drive.

Drive Features

Following are the distinctive features of the drive.

  • Maximum deceleration and acceleration are achieved without tripping owing to the active and vigilant bus voltage and current limit regulation.
  • Drive responsiveness to torque or speed directives is improved by high-speed analog inputs.
  • The drive may link settings due to programming freedom.
  • Without requiring any speed input, Flying Start provides a smooth and immediate connection into spinning loads, independent of the requested direction.
  • An independent process loop controller may be unnecessary with integrated process PI control.
  • Inertia Ride-Through uses the spinning energy stored in high-inertia, low-friction loads to provide trip-less operation during a lengthy power outage.
  • Toto offers point-to-point positioning or velocity profiling based on encoder counts, digital inputs, parameter levels, or time, the Position Indexer/Speed Profiler employs a 16-step indexer.

Incredible Network Communications Capability

PowerFlex 700S drives are completely compatible with a wide range of communication adapters and provide the following advantages:

  • Unconnected Messaging allows other network devices, such as PanelView-series products, to interact directly with a disc without the need of the network scanner.
  • Adapter Routing - Connect a PC to one drive and communicate with all other Allen-Bradley drives on the same network without going via a network scanner.
  • Over the network, users have complete control over all settings.
  • Initial connections are easier when Autobaud is available.
  • Change-of-State configures control messages that should be directed specifically upon customer-defined states, considerably reducing network traffic. Each node setting is quite configurable (for instance, "reference must vary by more than 5%").
  • Peer Control offers master-slave kind control amongst drives, allowing one or more slave drives, or consumers, to operate by the state of a master drive, also known as the producer. It may also greatly lessen network traffic.
  • ADR (“Automatic Device Replacement”) saves effort and time when substituting a drive by configuring a scanner for automatically recognizing any new drive and downloading the necessary parameter settings.
  • Fault Configuration Flexibility - Adapters may be configured to perform fault-based actions i.e., ramp-to-stop, and hold the last state, coast-to-stop as well as communicate user-customizable speed reference values and logic control. Furthermore, different measurements can be taken depending on whether the network encountered a significant incident (broken cable, for example) or was idle (PLC set to "Program").

Environmental Considerations

The maximum altitude without derating for the PowerFlex 700S drive is 1000 m. Additionally, the atmospheric temperature of the surrounding area without derating for the PowerFlex 700S should range from 0 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius. However, for the heatsink and the front of the backplane, it is 0 to 40 degrees Celsius and 0 to 65 degrees Celsius, respectively. Its storage temperature should range from -40 to 70 degrees Celsius. The PowerFlex 700S AC drive should not be put in an environment that contains volatile or corrosive gases, fumes, or dust. If the drive will not be installed for an extended period, it must be stored in a corrosive-free environment. The relative humidity range for the drive is between 5 percent and 95 percent.

Installation

The PowerFlex 700S is often installed with input fuses or a circuit breaker. Additional restrictions for these systems may be imposed by national and local industrial safety rules and/or electrical codes.

Protection Against Peak Voltage for the Motors Having Lower Insulation Systems

Even though the PowerFlex 700S Phase II drive uses the best-reflected wave reduction technologies, few motors may possess systems of insulation that fall well short of NEMA/UL requirements. These motors could function as expected, but they still need to be guarded against the reflected wave transients that are generated by PWM drives.

An Appropriate Grounding System and Related Noise Reduction

Any solid drive installation should begin with correct grounding procedures. The majority of noise issues may be readily solved with good installation techniques.

Single-phase Input Power

The most common input supply for PowerFlex 700S drives is a six-pulse, three-phase supply.

Selection for Fan Voltage

A transformer is used by frames 5 and 6 to convert the incoming line voltage into the internal fan voltage. It might be essential to adjust the taps of the transformer if the line voltage differs from the voltage class shown on the nameplate of the drive.

The Voltage of the Cooling Fan for Common Bus Drives

The cooling fans on Common Bus drives must be powered by user-supplied 120V or 240V AC.

For drive installations, several cable types are permitted. An unshielded cable is sufficient for many installations, as long as it is kept away from critical circuits. Allow for spacing of 0.3 meters for every 10 meters of length. Long parallel runs should be prevented in all instances.

THWN, THHN, or equivalent wire can be used for the installation of drive-in dry sites if sufficient conduit fill rate limitations and/or free air space are supplied. THHN or similarly coated wire must not be utilized in moist locations. Any wire used must have an insulation thickness of 15 mils minimum and no significant deviations in insulation concentricity.

Shielded cable has multifaced advantages as multi-conductor wire plus a copper braided shield that may contain the noise produced by a standard AC drive. In installations containing sensitive components i.e., weighing machines, capacitive proximity, and other equipment that can be impacted by electrical noise in the distribution system, the shielded cable needs to be strongly considered. Applications that have a high extent of communications/networking-mandated EMC restrictions, or a large number of drives within a comparable area are also suitable candidates for shielded cables used.

Power Wiring

To aid with installation, the PowerFlex 700S encompasses the following safety features:

  • Ground fault prevention provides dependable operation throughout startup and operation.
  • Overload protection for electronic motors extends motor life.
  • Common mode capacitors to ground and the removable MOV to ground provide interactivity with un-grounded systems. On the other hand, if the drive is put on a resistive grounded distribution system, an impedance grounded system, and so on, then these devices must be unplugged. Furthermore, if the drive power source is a regenerative unit, or if the DC power is supplied via an active converter, then these devices should be unplugged as well.
  • 6-kilovolt (kV) transient protection increases the resilience of systems with a 380 to 480-volt rated voltage.
