Allen Bradley - HMI

Panelview Plus 600

PanelView Plus 600 Terminals

PanelView Plus 600 Terminals from Allen Bradley are HMIs (human-machine interfaces) that have units with base configurations, come with an AC or DC power supply, are equipped with communication modules, and cover both color and grayscale displays. These terminals also have a USB port and CompactFlash card slot. Some important features of PanelView Plus 600 terminals are here to explore novelty in the product.

Base-Configured Units

PanelView Plus 600 Terminals have two versions of base-configured units:

  • One version of the unit is equipped with one USB port and an RS-232 port
  • The other version of the base-configured unit comes with a 10/100BaseT Ethernet port, an RS-232 port, and one USB port. It also has one network interface to support a communication module.

Power Input Options

Allen Bradley has designed PanelView Plus 600 terminals to work with AC (represented with code ‘A’ in catalog number) or DC (represented with code ‘D’ in catalog number) input supplies to furnish feasibility and flexibility in the application. AC signals could be anywhere from 85 to 264 volts with a frequency between 47 and 63 hertz. 600 terminals with an AC input power intake of 60VA maximum. Allen Bradley suggests its users connect the terminal to the secondary winding of a transformer when it is AC powered so isolation is ensured.

For DC terminals, DC signals could range between 18 and 30 volts. The power consumption for such a terminal is a maximum of 25W.  All PanelView Plus 600 DC terminals come with a DC power supply that is non-isolated. Anyhow, galvanic isolation is not provided by these power supplies. Class 2 DC-powered terminals might get the supply voltage from a DC source that is isolated, provided the indicated fuse kit is used. Using such isolated, separate, and ungrounded power supplies to power every terminal will protect terminals from damage that could be caused by loop currents in the ground connections.

The power input must also be protected by the use of a fuse or circuit breaker which must be rated below 15A. The routes of power supply lines to the terminal should be separate from communication lines. The cables should be shielded and grounded to prevent EMI (Electromagnetic Interference). This connection is also important from a safety point of view. Terminal units are provided by the manufacturer with an installed power terminal block. This block can be removed to ease maintenance, wiring, and installation.

Instruction Input Options

Instruction input to these terminals is be given in three different ways:

  • Keypad (represented with code ‘K’ in catalog number)
  • Touch screen (represented with code ‘T’ in catalog number)
  • Keypad and Touch screen (represented with code ‘B’ in catalog number)

The touch screens of these terminals are designed as analog resistive to receive touch input. These screens are operable with just a finger. Plastic stylus devices can also be used on the touchscreen. Anyhow, Allen Bradley suggests using a tip radius of 1.3mm for this device to avoid any sort of damage. The manufacturer also forbids the use of any other tool, device, or object to operate the screen as it might damage it.

When it comes to the keypad of PanelView Plus 600 terminals, it consists of the following keys:

  • F1 through F10 programmable keys which are to start different functions on the terminal screen. To provide for custom function labels on the keys, replaceable legends are also available.
  • Keypad on PanelView Plus 600 terminals has a numeric keypad, which includes keys numbered 0 through 9, enter, backspace, right tab, left tab, and shift keys
  • The third kind of key on the keypad is the navigation keys, which includes 4 arrow keys to ease navigation through different entries on the screen. These keys are also used to perform page up, page down, end, and activate home functions when used with the Alt key.

Display Options

PanelView Plus 600 terminals have a 5.5-inch screen (represented with code ‘6’ in catalog number), which could have either grayscale graphics (represented with code ‘M’ in catalog number) having a resolution of 320 X 240 pixels or colored graphics (represented with code ‘C’ in catalog number) display. This display is FSTN (film compensated super twist nematic). For both displays, the display area is 112 X 84 mm or 4.4 X 3.3 inches. The typical luminance of the screen on these terminals is 300 cd per square meter Nits. The terminal’s screen has a CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) backlight with a minimum of 50,000 hours of life. This display screen needs 10 to 110g operating force.

Battery and Clock

PanelView Plus 600 terminals also have a battery for backup, which has an estimated life of 5 years minimum if kept at 25 ˚C. This battery provides backup power for the clock also. Anyhow, a difference or error of +/- 2 minutes can occur in this clock.

LED Indicators

PanelView Plus 600 terminals feature LED (light-emitting diode) indicators to facilitate its users' quick checkups. Green-colored LED denotes COMM and that normal operation is running. If an LED turns red, it indicates some fault in the operation of the terminal.

Memory Storage Option

Allen Bradley has incorporated application flash memory within the PanelView Plus 600 terminals. Series A terminals have a flash memory of 5 MB, while it is 10 MB for series B or later terminals. To enhance device usability, the option of external CompactFlash storage is also available, which can go up to 512 MB.

USB Ports

PanelView Plus 600 terminals are equipped with a USB (Universal Serial Bus) port. The open-circuit voltage, Voc, of the host port in the circuit of this terminal is 5.25 volts DC, and the maximum output current, Isc, from the host USB is 1.68 amperes. The maximum voltage and maximum current should remain below the DC voltage and short circuit current.

Compatible Peripheral Devices

A range of USB peripheral devices can be used with Allen Bradley terminals to perform select, choose, type, and click options. Below is a list of compatible devices:

  • USB keyboard
  • Optical USB mouse
  • USB mouse
  • USB hub

Communication Modules

As stated earlier, the one version of the base-configured units supports a network interface, which provides the option of using a communication module. These modules are used to enhance the communication capability of the system with ControlNet, Isolated RS-232 (represented with code ‘5’ in catalog number), DH+, and DH-485. A communication module for PanelView Plus 600 terminals can be installed easily via the backs of the terminals.

Environmental Compatibility

PanelView Plus 600 terminals may be used in the following types of environments:

  • Ordinary and non-hazardous locations
  • Class III environments
  • Group F and G from Division 2, Class II environments
  • Group IIC from Zone 2, Class I environments
  • Groups A, B, C, and D from Division 2, Class I environments

In any case, users are instructed to ensure that the surrounding area is non-hazardous and that the power has been removed before disconnecting equipment or connections. The same is to be ensured before replacing the real-time clock or a battery. If the user substitutes some components, then the final category of environments may become unsuitable. Allen Bradley notifies that these terminals should not be used in environments with atmospheric gases having an ignition temperature of below 135 ˚C. Appropriate wiring instructions and codes from the National Electrical Code or Canadian Electrical Code must also be followed for safe operation in any environment.

When these terminals are operated in an area with a maximum temperature of 55 ˚C, then temperature code T4 is applicable. The storage or non-operating temperature of PanelView Plus 600 terminals ranges from -25 ˚C to 70 ˚C. These terminals dissipate 85 BTU per hour. The relative humidity of the environment where the terminal is to be placed can range between 5% and 95% with no condensation. The operating altitude for these terminals is up to 2000 meters. The terminal can operate well with an operating shock ranging up to 15g for a duration of 11 milliseconds. On the other hand, these devices can bear a non-operating shock of 30g for a duration of 11 milliseconds.

Terminals Sizes/Dimensions

PanelView Plus 600 terminals are designed as a smart product. Its dimensions vary as the instruction input method varies. Terminals having a keypad or both a keypad and touchscreen have a 268mm width and a 167mm height. Terminals with just a touchscreen have a height of 152mm and a width of 185mm.

Terminal Mounting or Installation

Allen Bradley provides PanelView Plus 600 terminals to its users as an open type of equipment. Therefore, an enclosure must be used to mount these devices. Enclosure selection must be done carefully so it complies with all the specific and relevant environmental conditions. The enclosure should be designed appropriately so there could be no access to live parts of the terminal, terminating the chances for personal injury. Moreover, the interior should be accessible by the use of appropriate tools only.

The selection of an enclosure is extremely important because if the terminal is mounted in an enclosure that is not equivalent to the terminal in its ratings, then the NEMA and IEC ratings for the terminal also do not comply.

The selection of an appropriate enclosure and terminal orientation becomes even more important when the device is being used as a high bright display module or used outdoors. The material used in the buildup of the terminal bezel is to ensure prolonged field life of the device, though proper installation will extend the life further.

Infrared and ultraviolet radiations affect the field life of electronic devices negatively, fading their colors and making their material brittle. Therefore, it is encouraged to use an antiglare overlay. Such overlays protect the device from direct UV exposure.

Furthermore, if the front of the terminal front is exposed to direct sunlight during the hottest hours and the temperature of the surrounding environment exceeds 40 degrees Celsius, then the use of a visor kit is highly recommended. This kit helps in maintaining the internal temperature within a specified limit and reduces the solar load on the front part of the terminal.

Despite all precautions and measures, if the cabinet temperature exceeds 55 ˚C, then the built-in sensors signal the system to reduce the backlight intensity automatically. Furthermore, the manufacturer suggests the use of active cooling or stirring fans in high temperature (above 55 ˚C) environmental conditions or at high altitudes. If the temperature goes below 0 ˚C, then installation of a heater is recommended.
