Kinetix 5700

The Kinetix 5700 units perform well in tasks involving the control of fans and pumps in many applications. These modules are qualified for use in enclosures that are IP30, NEMA/UL Type 1, have a frame size of "H," and do not have a flange mount. A torque of roughly 40 Newton-meters (354 pounds-inches) is recommended for a frame of this size. It is not appropriate to link it with wires that are either narrower than 127 MCM (250 MCM) or wider than 253 MCM (500 MCM). These modules can be locally modified through the use of the keypad, also known as the integrated Human Interface Module (HIM). This keypad features two parameter lines, each of which can show sixteen characters. The exterior casing of the non-flex insulated cable is made of industrial TPE, which enables the cable to withstand the demanding circumstances present in an industrial environment. The connector that comes with this cable is compatible with the Kinetix VP motors, which can be used with this connector. A method that eliminates the need for lead preparation on-site is used in the production of this cable. Attachments such as bulkhead converter kits can be used to secure the cable in place as it travels through the cabinet. These kits are available as accessories and come with all the necessary connectors, including power, brake, and threaded or SpeedTec DIN connectors.

A Kinetix 5700 Selection Guide

Kinetix 5700 is a series of servo drives by Allen-Bradley, used in motion control applications. These drives provide control of servo and induction motors for large machines with high power requirements and high axis counts from a single platform. Traditionally, such large custom machines required separate high-power and high-axis drive platforms, to meet their motion-control needs. However, the Allen-Bradley Kinetix 5700 combines high-performance vector and servo motor control capabilities into a single servo drive. This reduces machine complexity and wiring requirements, allowing for easier configuration and integration of the drives with other systems.

With the Kinetix 5700 drives, machine builders can realize up to 70% control cabinet-space savings, as these drives are characterized by a power-dense design. Essentially, Kinetix 5700 drives operate within a large power range from 1.6KW to 112KW, making them an ideal choice for a variety of industrial applications. Some of the target industries include beverage, food, and consumer products processing plants, as well as automotive and tire manufacturing factories.

Power Supply Options

A DC-bus (converter) power supply provides Kinetix 5700 drive systems with a three-phase input voltage. The Kinetix 5700 drive modules use a common bus-connection system to share the input power from one drive module to another since the drive modules are zero-stacked.  A single 2198-Pxxx DC-bus power supply or a 2198-RPxxx regenerative bus supply is enough to power a simple Kinetix 5700 drive system. Therefore, ensure that you specify your Kinetix 5700 drive in terms of DC-bus power supply and regenerative bus supply.

DC-Bus Power Supply Specifications

Kinetix 5700 drives with DC-bus supplies (Cat. No. 2198-Pxxx) can accept a three-phase input power with voltage ratings of 195 to 528 volts AC rms (240/480V nominal input), at an input frequency ranging from 47 hertz to 63 hertz. A single 2198-Pxxx DC-bus supply provides a Kinetix 5700 drive system with a 276- to 747-volt shared DC-bus power supply ratings of 7 kilowatts and 46 kilowatts. If your drive application requires additional output power, you can install up to three (3) 2198-P208 DC-bus power supplies.

Additional inverter clusters can also be used to extend the DC-bus power supply through accessory modules. The DC-bus feature allows for the expansion of the inverter output, for the inclusion of 200-volt Kinetix MPF, MPM, MPL, MPS servo motors, as well as Kinetix VPH, VPL, VPH rotary servo motors with either a 2198-xxxx-ERS4 inverter or a 2198-xxxx-ERS3 (series B) inverter.

Regenerative Bus Supply Specifications

A Kinetix 5700 Regenerative Bus Supply (Cat. No. 2198-RPxxx) can accept a three-phase 324 to 506 volts AC rms input power (480V nominal input) at an input frequency of 47/63 Hz. This input voltage range applies only when the DC-bus voltage regulation is enabled. The 2198-RPxxx regenerative bus supply then provides regenerative power (24 kW to 140 kW) to and from the Kinetix 5700 common DC-bus power supply system, as well as full-line monitoring.

You can configure the regenerative bus supply to provide passive AC rectification or DC-bus voltage regulation. When the DC-bus voltage regulation is disabled, the input voltage to the Kinetix 5700 Regenerative Bus Supply will range from 324V AC to 528V AC.

Communication and Controller Requirements

A common communication protocol is required for the drive system to exchange data/information with its controller. Your choice of communication protocol will greatly depend on the type of controller being used, the required connectivity speed, and if there is a master-slave configuration between multiple Kinetix 5700 drives. This means that you will need to select the controllers and communication protocols that are compatible with the Kinetix 5700 drives.

The Kinetix 5700 drive modules connect and operate using various controller Platforms. The Logix 5000 controllers compatible with the Kinetix 5700 drives include standard controllers (CompactLogix 5480, CompactLogix 5370, and CompactLogix 5380), as well as controllers with Integrated Safety features (Compact GuardLogix 5380 and Compact GuardLogix 5370 controllers).

Kinetix 5700 systems are designed to support Integrated Motion over the Ethernet/IP network. They include dual Ethernet ports to support Linear, Star, and Device-Level Ring (DRL) network topologies. The Ethernet/IP communication modules available with the Kinetix 5700 include the 1756-EN3TR module, the 1756-EN2T module, and the 1756-EN2TR module.

Feedback Signal Support

You need to choose the right feedback module to enable your selected Kinetix 5700 servo system to provide closed-loop operation by detecting and correcting errors in the motor’s velocity, torque, or actual position. The selected Kinetix 5700 drive must be compatible with the signal of the connected feedback device to process the signal and communicate it to the connected controller.

Kinetix 5700 drives can accept feedback signals from Hiperface, EnDat, and incremental encoders supported on Universal feedback (UFB) connector. They also accept feedback signals on the motor feedback (MF) connector from Stegmann Hiperface digital-servo-link (DSL) encoders. The UFB and MF connectors are used in various applications, including Dual-loop control, Auxiliary feedback-only axis, and Motor feedback applications. Using the 2-pin (MF) feedback connector, the Kinetix 5700 drives can support Kinetix VP motors with Stegmann Hiperface DSL feedback encoders.

Note that the Kinetix 5700 drives can accept feedback signals from other Allen-Bradley actuators and motors with Stegmann Hiperface multi-turn or single-turn high-resolution absolute encoders, other than the Kinetix VP rotary servo motors. However, to make this possible, a 2198-H2DCK Hiperface-to-DSL (series B or later) converter kit must be used to connect those devices to the MF connector of the Kinetix 5700 drive. The converter kit converts Hiperface -to-DSL feedback. Alternatively, the Universal feedback (UFB) connector can be used to connect those actuators and motors to the Kinetix 5700 drives.

Using the 15-pin (UFB) universal feedback connector, and in most cases with sharing connector pins, the Kinetix 5700 drives can support a variety of different feedback devices. To terminate the feedback conductors, you should use the 2198-K57CK-D15M universal feedback connector kit.

Be sure to select a feedback device that is supported by the Kinetix 5700 drive you’re considering. In most cases, encoder feedback supported on the UFB connector is mainly preferred, as it is readily compatible with the Kinetix 5700 drives. Please note that only the Allen-Bradley motors with intelligent, high-resolution, absolute, EnDat, and incremental encoders can be auto-configured with Kinetix 5700 drives.

Functional Safety Configuration Options

Functional safety is mandatory on all types of servo drives, including the Kinetix 5700 drives. Ensure that you select a Kinetix 5700 drive with Safe Stop 1 (SS1) and Safe Torque-Off (STO) drive-based safety functions, that can be either integrated over the Ethernet/IP network or hardwired to the servo drive. For more advanced safety options, select a Kinetix 5700 drive with Safely Limited Speed (SLS) function in addition to other controller-based safety commands.

To connect to external safety devices and cascaded safety hardwiring between multiple drives, the Kinetix 5700 drives use the safe torque-off (STO) connector.  If reduction in the overall wiring of the Kinetix 5700 system is a key factor for your specific application, then select a drive with integrated safety within the Ethernet/IP network. The integrated safety feature eliminates the need to separately wire safety devices. This reduces the complexity of the wiring system, allowing for faster troubleshooting in case of malfunctions within the drive system, which ultimately results in less downtime and cost savings.

Integrated safety features enable simplified change in the safety zoning and configurations. This feature also reduces changeover time, as the system devices do not require to be physically rewired. For safety-critical applications, a Kinetix 5700 servo drive with integrated advanced safety is highly recommended. As the advanced safety features consist of three safe monitoring functions and five safe stop functions. The additional safety functions provide a comprehensive defense system, capable of addressing a wide range of electronic and physical threats.

Single-axis or Dual-axis Inverters

Specify whether you require a Kinetix 5700 drive with a dual-axis module or a single-axis module. Drives with single-axis inverters have DC power supplied internally to each drive, while drives with dual-axis inverters utilize a centralized DC power supply in which the axes share the common DC power through multi-axis shared DC-bus configurations.

Dual-axis drives generally cost less compared to the single-axis drives, as the dual-axis modules do not have the AC to DC rectification section. Also, the dual-axis modules require less control cabinet panel space, since a single dual-axis drive unit can offer multiple axes control. On the other hand, single-axis drives are preferred when the power requirements are more than 15kW for each axis.

Hence, you can choose either a single-axis or a dual-axis Kinetix 5700 depending on your power needs, cabinet and cost-savings requirements, as well the number of axes that will suffice your application needs. The inverters for both categories available with the Kinetix 5700 drives are outlined below.
